NEW STAFF INTERVIEWS

mr-retton

Principal: James Retton

Q: What brings you here to Indian Creek, and how do you like it so far?

A: There are several things that bring me to Indian Creek. First off, for my old job, I would have to drive 106 miles every single day. The drive was long and boring. I have always been in a high school and I wanted to continue my career in it. I love the high school environment and being able to help the students get to the next level. My father taught in the Indian Creek school district and when I came back to the valley, I had to be in the district. I love it.

Q: Where did you go to college and what did you major in? Did you always want to become a teacher?

A: I went to Muskingum University and loved it there. I majored in Comprehensive Social Studies and Education. I received my masters from Salem International University in West Virginia. I taught the subjects of history, geography, psychology, and sociology. I always wanted to be a teacher and a coach, but never thought about being a principal. Halfway through my career, I was offered a position as principal. This position became a really good fit for me, and it’s all I have wanted to do since then.

Q: Are you married? Do you have any children?

A: Yes, to my wife Kristy. We will be married for 20 years this summer. She works in the images mammography for Trinity. We have a son named Grant that goes to Notre Dame. He’s a sophomore there and plays on their football team. We also have a spoiled little daughter, which is a dog, named Zoey. She’s my sidekick.

Q: What is your favorite pastime or hobby?

A: I love horse racing.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: That one is easy, pizza. My favorite would have to be DiCarlos Pizza in Wellsburg.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A: This one also ties up with my favorite pastime or hobby. I race horses. I have seven 3rd breed racing horses. We’ve been winning lately with my horses, and it is such a fun experience. My father and I always talked about purchasing race horses one day, and I finally gave in and bought the horses. It was one of the best decisions ever.

P.S. I want to say thank you to everyone that has made this opportunity possible. My goal is to prepare students academically and socially for the next level. Hopefully the Indian Creek Staff and I can achieve this goal and prepare every single student as much as possible before they graduate.
